In the logic of disapproval of the visions imposed by certain media, the artist Billy puts himself on stage. Having been asked on several occasions to reproduce the wishes of directors, he is now rebelling against these practices which he finds calculating. In his performances, he breaks the screens. Monitors in which he himself is shown breaking other screens. To say how much his act argues on the manipulation of the media, and especially of the directors with whom he had to play oriented roles and presented according to agendas not corroborating the reality, but rather feeding the expectations of an empty public of a rebranded “exoticism”. Through this act of destruction, a new narrative construction emerges from the deconstruction of prefabricated and stereotyped imaginaries, to make room for reality that does not respond to anachronistic and sclerotic agendas.
Billy Ngalamulume, commonly known as Kill Bill, was born in Kinshasa. He lives and works there as a multidisciplinary artist: performance, graffiti artist, slammer, etc. He is a member of the Farata collective and has graduated in interior design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kinshasa in 2013.
He has taken part in several artistic activities in Kinshasa including the Kinact festival, the Art Tembo art competition and the Kinshasa performance art meeting called “Kin-Etelemi-Telemi” organised by the Farata collective of which he is the co-founder.
Billy puts his body forward. He uses it, in collusion with other recycled materials, as a medium to deal with subjects related to his personal journey in the art world, as well as subjects of general interest such as questions about the environment, the history of his country and disapproval of the media’s postures towards the masses. He has also been able to combine his practice with information and communication technologies via video projections during his performances. With hardcore performances, this expressive and sometimes shattering subject-body emits echoes through gestures and actions raising question towards the society.
